I’m Nuno Pinto Gonçalves, 71 years old.
When I was 12, I received a batch of matchboxes from my father and started a collection that prospered during my youth. In my twenties this collection competed with a lot of other interests and responsibilities, so it lingered, almost abandoned, till my sixties. Upon retirement I decided to continue, reorganize and expand the matchbox collection.
On this recent reorganization of my collection, I included a rather unusual theme, but very dear to me: Telecommunications, the business sector I have worked all my professional life.
I take this unique opportunity of the online exposition being “open” to share with you this theme.
Telecommunication means transport of information and may include communication by flags, mail, pigeons or even smoke. To me, a retired telecom engineer, it means equipment and processes that use electromagnetic signals to transport and treat information, like telecom operators do, along with its suppliers. Thus, this includes the partners or competitor´s companies I have dealt with during my professional life.
The set of matchboxes I’m bringing to this AFP online exhibition is almost all my matchboxes from my “Telecommunication” theme:
1. Telecom operators
2. Telecom suppliers for network equipment
3. Telecom suppliers for terminals
4. International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT), the architype “conglomerate” from the 60´s to 80´s (included operations, equipment, yellow pages, labs, mining, hospitality, you name it…).
